Talk to the Cape Horticultural Society on 19 April 2016

In my recent visit to South Africa in April this year I was invited to talk to the Cape Horticultural Society, one of the participating members of Mediterranean Gardening International.

Burford Hurry at the Cape Horticultural Society

The meeting was held at eight o’clock in the Erin Hall in Rondebosch  in  Cape Town and Glenda Thorpe, the secretary,  had arranged for a car to collect myself, my brother, Dr Lynn Hurry  and Ze Pascoal and take us to the meeting.  The topic of my talk was  ‘A stroll through three Algarvian gardens’, the three being my own, Anna Jung’s and Rosie Peddle’s gardens .

Question and Answer time

There was a good turnout of about 50 members  and guests.  They were an excellent audience and although the talk was about an hour long they were interested and attentive. At the end questions were asked and I handed across MGAP’s  gift to the Cape Horticultural Society , a copy of Olivier Filippi’s ‘Planting Designs for Dry Gardens’. They were delighted. In the general discussion which followed  two members asked for seeds of the Canarina Canariensis and Capparis spinosa which they had seen in photographs of my garden.

Subsequent to the talk I visited Alison James’  who has a near vertical garden at Simonstown and which is filled with succulent treasures and came home with a couple of plants which I think would do well in a water-wise setting.
The outcome of the talk and our meeting is that we have now  established good lines of communication with the CHS and I’m sure  we can look forward to a mutual and very beneficial association with the Society.
